Workshop: Political Abuse of Psychiatry

How can medical power be abused for the purpose of political and social oppression? Here, we will explore how the field of psychiatry has been misused in order to obstruct human rights and maintain control over the public, particularly against individuals or groups that challenge the status quo.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty that deals with diagnosing, preventing and treating mental disorders. However, there are criticisms over the validity and reliability of the criteria used to diagnose individuals and to define illness. There is particularly great potential for abuse in psychiatry. Political abuse of psychiatry refers to the misuse of psychiatry for the purpose of social or political oppression.

Political abuse of psychiatry has often been associated with totalitarian regimes, but has not been absent from Western countries. Ending psychiatric abuse may lie in stimulating communication and access to information among the world mental health community.
