Step Up For Mental Health® has joined the #GivingTuesday movement, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. #GivingTuesday will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, and we have decided to pay it forward block-by-block until the end of the year handing out our ‘Swag Bags’ to families in need at two shelters in Chicago and persons living on the street. We are also having a year-end challenge to raise funds for 2018!
How to get started helping us raise donations
- Crowdrise. Donate or join the team and help raise funds. (Starts Nov 21 through Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at 1:59:59 p.m. ET.)
- Become a peer supporter and raise donations from family and friends on Facebook using their charitable giving tools (Until Dec 31)
- Don’t have time to fundraise, donate to our programs and help us reach our goals!
- #MyMHStory – Share your mental health story as a caregiver or someone who is personally affected by it.
- #StepUpForMentalHealth and do one kind act to show that talking about mental health shouldn’t be scary in the home or outside of it.
We call it #GivingForward
We kicked off #GivingForward. I was moved by a woman I met in downtown Chicago who clearly had horrific sores all up and down her legs from diabetes and no place to seek support. We have a helpline where individuals can call or email us and we can help them find services or offer small grants, but sometimes you need to go to them and support someone truly going through a hard time when they need it most.
Learn about our Year-end Challenges!
“As a person who has been homeless myself as a young teen, I continue to reflect on how I can do more in the community of Chicago,” said Adrienne McCue, Executive Director. “In the past year, I have witnessed homeless individuals on Michigan Avenue from all walks of life: from families with pets, to men with two little girls in the cold, to women and kids. We have to do more. I know all too well how being homeless can take its toll on one’s mental health. Step Up for Mental Health considers the small things that will make life easier for others in that moment.”

Help us start this giving season off right as we try to raise $10,000 or more to help families who are suffering from mental health issues. We receive calls asking for services and assistance for a family member because they don’t know what to do or where to start. We want to be that go-to place to assist families with services they might not know exist. Together, we can affect change one family at a time.
Our #GivingForward campaign will touch these needs:
- Assisting families with local mental health services and support. (Partnership: Aunt Bertha)
- Providing ‘Swag Bag’ basics needs to men, women and children living on the streets or in shelters. (socks, mouthwash, blanket, toilet paper, children books, etc)
- Helping families yearly through our programs
